This project combines the carefully restoration of a Grade 2 listed Farmhouse with a contrasting contemporary extension, creating an eclectic home for an art gallerist and her family.

When our client bought the C18th farmhouse just outside Bruton Somerset, the building was poorly connected to its garden and lacked a generous family living space. Our brief was to help restore the building, reorganise the interior spaces, but also to create an unexpected and generous living space that connected to a new garden.

In close discussion with the conservation and planning team at Somerset, we developed a simple, but meticulously detailed charred-timber box, distinct and legible from the farmhouse. Tall oak-beamed ceilings, plaster walls and concrete floors create a paired-back interior suited for our clients’ contemporary art collection, while large sliding doors and windows overlook the garden, re-landscaped by local designers Viriditas.

The project combines restoration with contemporary design, creating a unique and inviting family home that enhances and enriches the original Farmhouse.
