Located on the edge of an escarpment, the site has spectacular views looking south towards the Pyrenees. Surrounded by mature trees, it is the perfect setting for guests to escape from the world, relax and recharge in a calm and tranquil environment.
The project’s focal point is the conversion of a substantial stone and timber barn. In its original state the neglected barn had suffered subsidence, making it necessary to restabilise the walls and foundations.
Our proposal was to great a series of bold interventions, including an insitu concrete mezzanine floor and two large concrete framed openings that both stabilise the structure and reconfigure the barn. Together with the careful restoration of the stone walls and timber roof structure, we will create two dramatic, calm, materially-rich spaces, combining rough and smooth textures, subtly washed with natural light.
Elsewhere on the site we restored several smaller buildings, including a piggery, bakery, tractor shed, as well as the main farmhouse. These are incorporated within an overall masterplan, creating a community of accommodation set within the landscape.
